Inside Mass NOW: Meet Sara Feijo

Mass NOW has a new face: Sara Feijo, Co-Vice President of Communications.Feijo joined the Mass NOW Board of Directors in March, bringing her creative eye, ear for a good story, and passion for women’s rights. She works with Co-Vice President of Communications, Mary-Liz Murray, on internal and external communications, from branding and messaging to social media and print and web design. Here, she chats about her role at Mass NOW and her favorite feminist quote.

Q: What part of the Mass NOW mission are you most passionate about?

A:  All of it. But if I had to choose one area, it would be ending violence against women—a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights. The World Health Organization estimates that about one in three women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. This violence causes serious short- and long-term physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health problems for survivors and their children, and leads to high social and economic costs. The health and safety of those who identify as women and girls is a priority. We need to continue our support for anti-violence policies and programs that protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.

Q: What’s one big achievement you’re working toward right now?

A: Mary-Liz and I are working on enhancing external communications at Mass NOW so that all of our wonderful members and volunteers are up-to-date on new initiatives and opportunities to become involved. We’re excited to announce Mass NOW’s legislative priorities soon, and we are cooking up some ideas to enhance our website and social media presence. Stay tuned! We also want your feedback, so let us know what you think of our inaugural e-newsletter, website, and social media channels.

Q: What's your favorite feminist quote and why?

A: “I never doubted that equal rights was the right direction. Most reforms, most problems are complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about ordinary equality.”That quote really hits home, because, as Alice Paul so eloquently said, there is nothing complicated about equality. Every human being should be treated the same regardless of their gender, race, class, sexual orientation, or age. Yet so many people still face discrimination daily.
