Mary-Liz recently joined the Mass NOW board as Co-VP of Communications. Mary-Liz is a native Bostonian, a lifelong feminist, a macaroni and cheese connoisseur, and the owner of Streamix Consulting, a small digital communications and social media marketing firm. She is a born communicator who is always looking for creative, collaborative ways to build awareness, create engagement, and encourage learning by building relationships and encouraging dialogue. Here, she talks why she’s called to work with Mass NOW and her current journalism crush (#RealNewsOnly).
Q: What's your favorite feminist quote and why?
A: “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.” - Rebecca WestFirst, I love this quote because it was recorded in 1913! That in and of itself speaks to the longevity of the feminist movement and how it’s unfolded throughout modern history. Second, I really identify with the idea that feminism has multiple definitions. It’s always evolving and each individual person’s sense of what feminism is and how they participate in the world as feminists is different. And that’s important. As we look ahead and continue to address issues of oppression - of race, class, sexuality, and gender - my hope is that using the “feminist” label will become a calling card for all people who are standing against injustice across many contexts.
Q: What part of the NOW mission are you most passionate about?
A: I am so excited by our legislative work and our dedication to engaging people in the political process. My passion comes in the education and empowerment themes in our mission. Educating our community about the issues before our state government; encouraging them to get to know their legislators; offering them tools to show support for the bills that are important to them; and empowering them to engage in the political process by voting, calling, writing, testifying, and running for office.
Q: What’s Your Favorite News Outlet?
A: NPR. And I have a serious journalism crush on John Dickerson, CBS News political director, host of Face the Nation, and co-host of Slate’s Politcial Gabfest.
