Mass NOW INC Celebrates SCOTUS Marriage Equality Decision
Mass NOW INC Celebrates SCOTUS Marriage Equality DecisionJune 26, 2015Today the U.S. Supreme Court made history, recognizing in Obergefell v. Hodges the constitutional right of same-sex couples to marry. As the first state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage, Massachusetts has always been on the forefront of the fight for equality, and Mass NOW, Inc. is proud to have been working at the frontlines of that struggle. We are excited and overjoyed that our friends, family members, and neighbors across the country will all have the same right to marry as us – equality should not be bound by state lines.Over the past eleven years, we have seen great strides towards equality for all LGBTQ people, but equality does not end with marriage. In many states, you can still be fired from your job because of your sexual orientation, and you can be denied housing, employment, and access to public spaces because of your gender identity. Equality is a process and direct action is needed. In 2011, we saw progress when Massachusetts passed the Transgender Equal Rights Act to ensure that trans people could not be denied employment, education, or a home because of their gender. Today, we are fighting for the right of transgender people to exist without fear of discrimination or harm in public spaces by working to pass An Act Relative to Transgender Anti-Discrimination (S735/H1577). Mass NOW, Inc. encourages you to contact your elected officials and voice your support for this bill. Massachusetts should continue to lead the nation in the fight for full equality for all, and with you, we can.Let’s continue to celebrate today, and continue the fight tomorrow.Yours for Equality,Katie HaydenPolicy & Operations ManagerMass NOW, INC.
